Like "shug," darlin' is another sweet little name for that special Southern someone in your neck of the woods. I typically use it in sentences when I need to tell the "Mrs." about something rather unpleasant; to sugar-coat it. For example: "Ummm, darlin', I just dropped the antique china you bought last weekend at the flea market" or "No, darlin, I haven't gotten around to that garage cleaning yet!" To all you newly wed guys -- it's best to use shug, darlin, and sweetie all in the same sentence for extra impact.
