A delicious afternoon picnic from the '60s consisting of fresh watermelon, lemonade, fried chicken, strawberry cake and so much more! Placed near the lake, reminiscent of afternoon lunch while on the lake. The technique of creating the background of the painting is very similar to screen printing in that the colors are built up through layers. The layers advertently create a textured pattern of the grass and water. Then individual details are painted on using acrylic and spray can.

The "Pier at the Lake House" painting is a classic childhood memory for Susan. Going to the the lake in Minnesota as a kid was the yearly family vacation she always looked forward to. The water was cold all the time and sun was always out. The Lake was a natural body of water, so the water always has slight green tint, bur regardless all the children would jump in with their summer suits and floats. I always had the slight hesitation to jump in due to my swimming abilities, but still went in.

This painting features an animatronic horse commonly found outside of a grocery store in the 60s.
As child, all I wanted was a pony for my birthday. Every birthday for several years I wanted my very own pony. As a child I have no idea about taking care of a living animal or the other responsibilities needed to maintain a horse, but as a child you don't care about that. However, the closest I could get to having a horse was asking my mom for a quarter and riding the horse at the store while she checked-out with the cashier. I imagined riding my pony through green fields and jumping white picket fences. The wind in my hair, just galloping in freedom with my horse.
This painting is about the longing for something, and accepting the next best thing to achieve that dream until you get there. Finally after 8 years, my dad bought me riding lessons out in the suburbs of Chicago. I continued to horse back-ride well into my 30's.

The Royal Street Horse Post Painting truly showcases the regality that New Orleans has to offer.
The rich greens and blues combined with the rich brass offer a strong background to showcase this stoic horse. The clean lines remind one of the structure and tradition that the city was molded on, while the crackles in the media remind us that the city's history runs deep in its veins.
The simplicity of this horse reminds us that classic is always best, whether it be for a meal, outfit, or accent piece. Royal Street Horse offers a clean take on the horse collection that would be a great addition to any home, office, or library. We hope this piece speaks to the traditionalist in you!

"Tennis Court"
This original painting is currently on display at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. This art exhibition runs through January 2023. The painting is owned by a private collector and is gracious on loan for this exhibition.
The painting features three girls having completed their tennis matches. The middle girl has won a trophy.
One after school activity I was in for many years was tennis. In my childhood, tennis camps like these would have a program at the end of the season to have all the kids compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and receive small shelf trophies. In this painting I wanted to highlight the importance of the trophy as a kid, it felt bigger and more rewarding. I wanted all the imagery to be fuzzy like remembering a memory because thats all I can do it remember the last time I remembered.
This piece is created by Susan Havens-Morris. The Life Series is based on moments, events, and things from Susan's childhood during the 70's and 80's.

"Tennis in an English Garden" Painting, LIFE series
Tennis is a true inspiration for me! From playing to watching. But while recently researching my old tennis shoes... Dunlop Green Flashes. I realized an extrodiary woman who wore them well before me. Christine Truman played Wimbledon Ladies Singles in 1957. She did win a grand slam at French Open in 1959
This is an excerpt from The Guardian (my research source) I cried after I read this...
Truman was the fifth of six tennis-playing children. She played mixed doubles at Wimbledon with her brother Humphrey, and her sister Nell was runner-up in the French Open doubles in 1972. Truman had to fight hard to get court time. At nine years old, her first tennis lesson was given to her after an older sister, Isabel, fell sick. “I was so happy,” she laughs.
In those days, there was no agent and no expectation of remuneration. When a BBC producer rang their home to ask if Christine would appear in the panel game Children’s Hour, hosted by Richard Dimbleby, for £3 and 10 shillings, her mother misunderstood the offer: “Certainly not! We cannot afford that sort of money for Christine to appear on television.” For sponsorship, Slazenger agreed to supply Christine with two rackets a year, and Dunlop provided two pairs of Green Flash tennis shoes.
Truman made her Wimbledon debut in 1957 at age 16 and reached the semi-finals, where she lost to Althea Gibson.
Now that is an inspiration!

The three types of tennis courts at tennis opens around the world. The Orange is a Clay Court at Roland Garros French Open, the Green is a Grass Court at Wimbledon in London, and the Blue is the hard acrylic of the US Open.
Clay and Grass are Classic courts known by all. However, we here at Haven Contemporary Haven have no idea what court type was used to play the US Open this year. Watching those players slip and slide around Arthur Ashe stadium in the 2022 US Open was scary. We highly recommend the US open resurface the court in either clay, grass, or carpet.

"Why would they want to compete?"
This painting gives light on female tennis players' hardship of becoming competitive players. While tennis is a welcoming sport, women had to fight for their respect while playing. This quote is a real statement from stan smith in the 70s. Before we start to hate on Stan Smith, let's admit the 70s were still a time when women we having to fight everywhere to be respected as individuals.
Quote in the painting: 'In the men's game, America Stan Smith, questions why women would want to compete. "These girls would be much happier if they settles down, got married, and had a family, " he told the UK's Daily Mirror. "Tennis is a rough life and it really isn't good for them. The Yellow Tomb is located in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 in New Orleans. St. Louis Cemetery was built in 1789, making it one of the oldest in the city.
One of the first things you'll see when you visit this cemetery is a bank of "wall vaults." These tombs stack gravesites, filing cabinet style, one above the other.
Many of these vaults house families, like the tomb, featured here. After a body is interred, it is left undisturbed in the grave for a period of one year and one day. At that point, the remains may be pushed to the back of the tomb, leaving room for another body to be interred. In fact, you can see that detail in this piece.
It appears that this tomb holds four, with someone recently being added in the upper right-hand corner. That corner has been cut open and re-plastered separately from the other three.
Our process of using torn, textured paper adds a three-dimensional element to the piece, accentuating the unique history of this tomb. Paint wash is then applied, creating a warm yellow backdrop, enhancing the whites and dark grays of the tomb. The dark reds, blues, and greens around the gate contrast with the vibrant backdrop, detailing the texture of the piece.
This photo was mounted to a textured paper background on a wood panel, then enhanced with Acrylic paint, CrasPas, and Oil Pastel.
Mixed Media: Paper on wood panel, with Acrylic, CrasPas, and Oil Pastel
